In a field full of winners, Marc Leishman was the best in Round 1 of the first tournament of the year.
Leishman shot a 6-under 67 to take a 1-stroke lead over Brian Harman and Jhonattan Vegas after one round at the Sentry Tournament of Champions being played at the Plantation Course at Kapalua, Hawaii.
He did most of his damage on the front nine, hitting birdies on #5, #7, #8 and #9 to get to the break at 4-under..
Harman shot a bogey-free 68 to tie Vegas for second at 5-under.
Rickie Fowler and world No. 1 Dustin Johnson are among those tied for fourth at 4-under. Fowler was 3-under at the turn, then bogeye 11 and double-bogeyed 13 to give it all back. He turned it on down the stretch with birdies on 14 and 15 and an eagle on 18.
European Tour rookie of the year Jon Rahm is tied for 12th at 2-under while PGA Rookie of the Year Xander Schauffele is tied for 17th at 1-under.
Not so successful rounds came from Jordan Spieth – tied for 30th after shooting a 75 – and 2017 US Open winner Brooks Koepka, bringing up the rear after shooting a 5-over 78.
Koepka opened the round with three bogeys and a double-bogey and only recorded one birdie on the round.
