Australia’s Marc Leishman scorched the field and the course on Day 1 of the BMW Championships, firing a 9-under 62 to take a 2-stroke lead on the first day of competition.
The field of 70 will be reduced to 30 at the end of the tournament, with those 30 moving on to the TOUR Championship next week in Atlanta.
“I hit the ball well, and the putter cooperated again,” Leishman told Golf Channel after the career-low round. “Rolling the ball really well. Feeling confident over all my clubs. It’s nice when you can get on a run like this. Hopefully I can keep it going.”
Leishman was seventh in the FedEx Cup standings entering this weekend. If he wins he should crack the top 5, which would put him within striking range of the overall title and the cool $10 million paydate that comes with it.
He has a two-stroke lead over Jason Day, Jamie Lovermark and Charley Hoffman. Three strokes behind are the likes of Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler, Rafa Cabrera Bello, Tony Finau and Keegan Bradley.
