American golf fans, when the US Ryder Cup team is being stomped by its European counterparts in a few weeks for the umpteenth time in a few weeks, you can place the blame solely on team captain Davis Love III.
Love, for reasons known only to himself, decided to basically jinx the team’s chances to win the Ryder Cup by proclaiming Saturday that “This is the best golf team, maybe, ever assembled.”
That sort of bravado might be OK if the recent history of the Ryder Cup had been all USA or even just a really fierce back-and-forth rivalry. But the Europeans won in 2014 … and 2012 .. and 2010. Overall, they’ve won six of the last seven; the lone US exception coming in 2008.
This year’s competition is being held at Minnesota’s Hazeltine National Golf Club.
What really seems ridiculous about Love’s statement is that the US team isn’t even complete. Love and his fellow captains have one more slot to fill, which they plan to do Sunday after the conclusion of the TOUR Championship in Atlanta.
