Branden Grace prepared for his ascendancy into the top 10 in the Official World Golf Rankings by defending his title at the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters Sunday at Doha Golf Club.
He finished two strokes ahead of Thorbjorn Olesen and Rafa Cabrera-Bello with a final-round 69 after starting the day two strokes behind Paul Lawrie.
“To get the first proper defence under the belt is something great, and something I’ve been dreaming of,” Grace said. after the win. “There’s no better place to do it than Qatar.”
He overcame a bogey on No. 5 with birdies on 6, 10, and the big one on 18 to put him two shots clear.
Lawrie, himself a two-time winner, seriously wilted with the lead. He started with a birdie, then bogeyed No. 2 and No. 5 before a double-bogey on 7 put him 3-over for the front nine.
Things only got uglier as he bogeyed 13, doubled 14 and bogeyed 16, ultimately finishing with a 6-over 78 to drop to a tie for 13th.
