Paul Azinger will be the new lead analyst for golf as Fox Sports enters its second year of televising PGA events including the US Open.
He replaces Greg Norman, who absorbed criticism for failing to deliver in big moments, including when Dustin Johnson’s three-putt on the 18th gave Jordan Spieth the US Open title last June.
Fox Sports president John Entz praised Azinger’s bluntness and knowledge of the game, along with his reputation.
“He has the credibility of being a major champion with a strong track record of experience in the broadcast booth,” Entz said. “He has been one of golf’s most candid and thoughtful analysts.”
Not lost in the story is the irony that Azinger defeated Norman in a playoff to win the 1993 at Inverness. He is also famous for leading the US to the 2008 Rydre Cup title, its only win there since 1999.
