There were no Majors to be won this year, but Rory McIlroy was still named the European Tour’s golfer of the year on Tuesday, the third time he’s won the award in four years.
McIlroy did win three Tour titles during an injury-riddled year, the biggest being the DP World Tour Championship that allowed him to repeat as Race to Dubai champion.
“It is a huge honour for me to be named European Tour golfer of the year again,” McIlroy said. “I feel very proud to have won this prestigious award for the third time – it is always special, no matter how often, to be recognised this way.
It’s been a nice week for McIlroy, ranked No. 3 in the world. Earlier he announced he had asked Erica Stoll to marry him and the two are now engaged.
