The 5 Best Golf Movies Ever

Movies have been on my mind a lot lately because, well, Star Wars!

I’d be a 41-year-old liar if I didn’t admit that the seventh installment of my beloved franchise has me eagerly anticipating December 18 even more than my lovely children are awaiting Santa Claus’ visit on the 25th.

But with another 12 days to force (pun intended) my way through to get back to the land of Han, Chewie, Luke, and Leia, golf movies wound up my mind.

Without further adieu, my personal 9 favorite golf-inclusive movies of all time.

Title: Animal House

Year released: 1980

Best golf scene: Otter and Boon vent frustration as they blast the helmet and horse) of the college’s bully / ROTC officer.

Best golf quote: “Don’t think of it as work, the point is to enjoy yourself.”

Title: Happy Gilmore

Year released: 1996

Best golf scene: Too many to count, but Happy’s scrap with pro-am partner Bob Barker has stood the test of time.

Best golf quote: “What a shot by Happy Gilmore! Who the hell is Happy Gilmore?”

Title: Caddyshack

Year released: 1980

Best golf scene: Anything featuring Carl Spackler (Bill Murray).

Best golf quote: “Cinderella story. Outta nowhere. A former greenskeeper, now, about to become the Masters champion. It looks like a mirac… It’s in the hole! It’s in the hole! It’s in the hole!”

Title: Space Jam

Year released: 1996

Best golf scene: I know this is a movie about cartoons playing basketball with Michael Jordan, but that doesn’t prevent it from qualifying thanks to an amazing scene on the links featuring Jordan, Larry Bird, Newman from Seinfeld, and Bill Murray.

Best golf quote: Murray: “It’s cause I’m white, isn’t it?” Jordan: “No. Larry’s white, so what?” Murray: “Larry’s not white, Larry’s clear.”

Title: Tin Cup

Year released: 1996

Best golf scene: Kevin Costner’s bull-headed pro refuses to take a penalty stroke until he has cleared the water on the 18th hole of the last round of the US Open, finally “acing” it on his 12th shot.

Best golf quote: I’m gonna qualify for the U.S. Open and I’m gonna kick your boyfriend’s ass!
