Emiliano Grillo notched a birdie on the second playoff hole to defeat Kevin Na and win the Frys.com Open Sunday in Napa, California.
Brendan Steele, who had led the tournament after each of the first three rounds, collapsed to a final-round 76 to wind up tied for 17th, five strokes off the lead.
Steele’s collapsed opened the door to several players, and five of them finished within one stroke of the top spot. Grillo’s 69, including a birdie on No. 18, allowed him to tie Na, who shot a 70, for the top spot and a playoff.
Na was just 1-over through 11 holes, but sprinted down the stretch to the tune of 4-under from No. 13 on.
Amazingly, neither of the men who tied the course record with a 63 during the tournament wound up higher than 10th.
Andrew Loupe, who charged up the leaderboard on Saturday, struggled with five bogeys on the day, three in the first eight holes, and ended up shooting a 74.
Steele looked like he had never seen a golf course before for most of his final round.
Only an eagle on No. 5 and a birdie on No. 9 kept him at even par on the front nine, He had three bogeys between No. 3 and No. 7.
He actually got to 1-under with a birdie on No. 10, then bombed out with five birdies in a six-hole stretch between No. 12 and No. 17 to fall completely out of the race.
