Henrik Stenson is two rounds away from his second FedEx Cup title in three years, but the runaway choice for 2015 Player of the Year is suddenly in hot pursuit.
Stenson dropped to 9-under on Friday in Atlanta, but Jordan Spieth’s 4-under 66 saw him close within three strokes of the leader.
Only four players shot under par on Friday, thus amplifying Spieth’s 66, which saw him climb three sports from fifth to second.
Stenson was 2-under through four holes on Friday, but bogeys on No. 5 and No. 8 dropped him back to 1-under at the turn. He added a birdie on No. 12 and parred the rest of the back nine to finish with a 68.
Spieth was quiet until birdying 8 and 9 in succession. He added birdies on 15 and 18.
The only other players to take the round under par were Australia’s Steven Bowditch, who got to 3-under with his 69 and is tied for fifth; and Justin Rose, who fired a 2-under 68 to rise from 17th to seventh.
Rory McIlroy shot a 1-over 71 to fall from third to tied for fifth.
