With one big victory, Troy Merritt went from FedEx Cup hanger-on to sure-fire contestant.
Merritt’s win at the Quicken Loans National saw him rise from 123rd to 38th in the latest FedEx Cup standings. The top 125 players in total points at the end of the regular season are invited to a series of four highly lucrative tournaments.
By securing a PGA Tour victory, Merritt all but assures himself of making the field of 125, something that seemed quite uncertain a week ago.
Merritt has 915 points. The player in 125th at current, Ryo Ishikawa, has 421.
Quicken Loans runner-up Rickie Fowler jumped from 24th to 16th in the standings. It was Fowler’s fourth top 10 finish in 15 events this year.
