Britain’s Sam Walker and Sweden’s Pontus Widegren each shot a second-round 66 to tie for the lead at the Madeira Islands Open through two rounds on Friday.
Walker was bogey-free and served up an eagle 2 on the par-4, 364-yard No. 6. Widegren also had a birdie, on the par-5, 538-yard No. 7, but a bogey 6 on No. 11 kept him from sole possession of the lead.
The pair have a one-stroke lead over Day 1 leader Antonio Hortal, who followed up his opening round 63 with a more pedestrian 71, starting off quickly with 2 birdies in his first six holes, but striking two bogeys over his last four.
The field widens from there, with four players tied for fourth at 8-under, including Sweden’s Bjorn Akesson, who shot the low round of the day, a 7-under 65.
