Down 5-1/2 to 3-1/2 points after the morning session at the EurAsia Cup in Malaysia, Team Asia rallied in the afternoon to three straight wins to retain its lead at the international competition.
Asia leads Europe 6-1/2 to 5-1/2 entering Sunday’s competition. The first team to 12-1/2 points wins. In the afternoon sessions, Asia’s Hideto Tanihara and teenage sensation Phachara Khongwatmai defeated Paul Dunne and Alex Noren for the second time in two days; Li Haotong and Nicholas Fung knocked off Bernd Wiesberger and Ross Fisher; and Yuta Ikeda and Gaving Green won three of the final four holes to rally past Alex Levy and Rafa Caberera Bello.
The morning session was completely different as Matthew Fitzpatrick and Thomas Pieters knocked off Sunghoon Kang and Poom Saksansin 3 and 2. That followed another 3 and 2 win by Tommy Fleetwood and Henrik Stenson over the top Asian squad of Anirban Lahiri and SSP Chawrasia. Paul Casey and Tyrrell Hatton went on to beat Byeong Hun An and Kiradech Aphibarnrat 2-1 to get the Europeans ahead by two points.
All 12 golfers from both sides will be in action in singles play on Sunday to determine the championship. Team Asia has already exceeded its total from 2016 when the Europeans cruised to a 18-1/2 to 5-1/2 point victory.
