Justin Rose’s magic disappeared on the final day of the 2017 European Tour season, allowing Spaniard Jon Rahm to win the DP World Tour Championship tournament in Dubai while England’s Tommy Fleetwood won the money title for the season.
Rahm shot a final-day 67 to finish 19-under and defeat Kiradech Aphibarnrat and Shane Lowry by a single stroke. Fleetwood finished tied for 21st but earned enough points to take the overall Race to Dubai title by about 500,00 points.
Rahm shot a bogey-free 5-under on Sunday to eke out the victory. Over the last 45 holes, he recorded 18 birdies against just one bogey.
Lowry nearly made an enormous comeback, finishing one stroke back with a 9-under 63 on Sunday. Despite a bogey on No. 3, he was 4-under on the front nine and 5-under on the back nine.
Rose cooled off with a 2-under 70 on Sunday. Rose was 4-under at the turn and the same through 11 before committing three bogeys in a five-hole stretch between No. 12 and No. 16. He wound up 2-over on the back nine to finish tied for fourth at 17-under.
Rose was a combined 10-under on the back nine through the first three rounds, then 2-over on Sunday. That struggle opened the door for Fleetwood, who won the overall title despite an ugly 74 on Sunday that saw him bogey 17 and 18, yet still win the overall title.
