World No. 1 Dustin Johnson fired a 63 to take a one-stroke lead over Brooks Kopeka midway through the WGC-HSBC Champions taking place in China this week.
The two top American golfers are neighbors in Florida.
“We don’t really play much golf,” Johnson said. “We go to the gym and we hang out, but we don’t go to the golf course together. We played last Saturday, and that was the first time we played in … I couldn’t tell you how long. All year, probably.”
Johnson enjoyed a new putter, a TaylorMade Spider from a manufacturer in China that he received right before heading for the course on Friday. He ended up using it for two 15-foot birdies along with a 5-footer on the 18th that got him to 13-under.
“The guys here in China made me one. I got it right before I walked to the tee,” Johnson said. “I hit a few putts on the practice green with it and I was like, ‘Oh, this will work pretty well.’ Went out and holed a lot of putts today, so I kind of like it.”
