Ageless Jimenez Tied for Lead at Omega European Masters

Migel Angel Jimenez is trying to write another chapter in his already remarkable career.

The 53-year-old is tied for the lead at the Omega European Masters in Switzerland after a round. He, Scott Hend and Tyrrell Hatton all fired 6-under 64s at Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Course on Thursday.

Three years ago, Jimenez set a record when he won the Open de Espana at age 50. He is the oldest player to win a title on the European Tour.  He was 3-under after seven holes on Thursday then bogeyed No. 11. He wound up with four more birdies between 12 and 18.

“When you hit it good, nothing is difficult. Nothing ever is easy but if you’re playing well, hitting good, that’s what you need to shoot low. I always enjoy to come here, it’s an amazing place. It’s amazing to come here every year and see the people you know from so many years in this place. The golf course is a great golf course. I’m playing well, we’ll see what happens. Six under par 64 is amazing, I’m playing very well. I woke up very early this morning and got the profit of that. I’m playing solid, I’m feeling nice and motivated. The pin positions are very fair. In these conditions they are holding very well. It’s not a very long course and they need to put up some kind of defence.”

Hatton, who was born during Jimenez’s ninth year on the tour in 1991, was just 1-under through 11 holes before racing down the stretch with an eagle on No. 12 and birdies on 15, 17 and 18.

Hend was 3-under through nine than ran off three straight birdies between 13 and 15.  He bogeyed 16 then made up for it on 18.

As he plays more and more on the Champions Tour where he has won three times, Jimenez has dropped off to 665th in the world and 211th in the Race to Dubai.

Four players are a stroke back, and six more are two strokes behind.
