The Players Championship: Day 1 Takeaways

William McGirt and Mackenzie Hughes aren’t exactly household names at the top of the leaderboard after Round 1 of The Players Championship, but there were plenty of other points of interest on Day One of what some call the Fifth Major.

2016 Masters Champion Danny Willett bombed out with an opening-round 79, then made it official by withdrawing from the tournament on Friday with back problems. He’s been slightly above a total disaster since last April, with nothing better than a tie for 39th except for taking fifth in a Euro Tour event in Malaysia earlier this year. He’s missed four cuts in nine starts this year, including at the 2017 Masters.

Sergio Garcia continues to draw headlines, this time by becoming just the eighth man to ace No. 17. Wlly Willcox did it in 2016, before that you have to retrace your steps to 2002 when Miguel Angel Jimenez took care of the toughest hole in one shot. It’s his second ace in a PGA Tour event, and his 12th career hole in one overall.

A true 21st century player, Jordan Spieth took a picture of a bunker with his cell phone after making a double bogey, upset about the way it was raked. I’m more confused by why he had his cell phone on him than anything else. Was he expecting an important call?
