McIlroy Blasts into WGC-Mexico Lead

Rib injury? What rib injury

Rory McIlory showed no signs of the injury that sidelined him for a month nor the stomach illness that had him puking a day ago, shooting a 6-under 65 to take the overall lead at the WGC-Mexico lead on Friday.

The No. 3 player in the world was 4-under at the turn and added two more birdies and an eagle 2 on the par 4 No. 14.

The Northern Irishman leads by two strokes over Justin Thomas, Ross Fisher, and Phil Mickelson.

Mickelson shot a 3-under 68 to reach 7-under. The 46-year-old is off to his best start in more than two seasons. Mickelson was 3-under through 13 before his lone blemish, a bogey on No. 14.

Thomas, the flavor of the month, fired a 5-under 66. Thomas has three wins in nine events already in the 2017 season.

Moving stealthily up the leaderboard behind  the first few competitors is none other than World 1 Dustin Johnson, whose 65 got him to within striking distance of the lead.
