South Africa’s Justin Walters fired a 7-under 65 to take a 1-stroke lead in a thick field atthe Joburg Open on Thursday.
Walters had just one blemish, a bogey on No. 3, but took back four strokes over the next four holes, including an eagle on No. 6.
He leads the field by one stroke over six players tied for second, and a full 99 competitors are at least one stroke under par through 18 holes.
Tied for 38th is last week’s winner Brandon Stone, who shot an opening-round 69 on the West Course while Walters 65 came on the East.
Among those tied for second is Englishman David Howell, one of just five players in the field to have already qualified for The Open Championship.
