Phil Mickelson, one of the most passionate and critical members of past US all-star teams, has been selected by captain Jay Haas to join the Presidents Cup, his 11th.
It’s Mickelson’s 21st straight US team – including the Presidents Cup and the Ryder Cup. The pick comes despite Mickelson being 30th in the standings.
Haas’ other pick was far easier, son Bill, who finished 11th in the standings.
The Presidents Cup will be held October 8-11.
International captain Nick Price picked two extra players sure to attract the attention of the South Korean host crowd – Steven Bowditch of Australia and Sang-Moon Bae, a native of South Korea.
Bae has been ordered to return home to serve a mandatory two-year military service; officials say he can play the Presidents Cup first.
