Love III, 51, Makes History at Wyndham

They all wanted to know if the old guy still had enough for one more title.

He did, just not the old guy they were talking about.

On a weekend largely dedicated to 39-year-old Tiger Woods, it was instead 51-year-old Davis Love III capturing the imagination of the American golf scene, winning the Wyndham Championship with a final-round 64 to finish 17-under.

Love is the third-oldest man to win  a PGA Tour event, trailing 52-year-old Sam Snead, and Art Wall who was 51 years, seven months in 1975 – Love is 51 years, 4 months.

After starting the day with a bogey, Love put together a stretch of birdie, birdie, birdie, eagle, birdie to hit 5-under through six. He slightly came back down to earth with a bogey, then hit seven straight pars before an eagle on 15 put him in front to stay.

Runner-up Jason Gore eagled No. 15 as well, but it came after he had bogeyed 13 and 14.

Tiger Woods, who started the day two strokes off the lead, stayed at 13-under with a final-round 70. Woods was even through 10 before melting down with a triple bogey 7 on No. 11 and a bogey on 12 to suddenly be 4-over.  He got hot with too little too late, four birdies on his last seven holes to finish tied for 10th.
