Troy Merritt shot a 10-under 61 with 11 birdies to jump from 35th to a tie for first at the Quicken Loans National.
He’s at 14-under along with Kevin Chappell, who shot a 67 to move up one spot.
Merritt opened his round with five straight birdies, and six in his first seven holes. He added four more in a row between holes 12 and 15.
Rickie Fowler is one stroke off the lead after shooting a 3-under 68. Eleven other players are within four strokes of the lead, including Justin Rose, who fired a 6-under 65.
Ryo Ishikawa, who was in first place after each of the first two rounds, fell to a tie for eighth at 11-under after shooting an even-par 71.
Tiger Woods fell back from tied for fifth to tied for 42nd after an ugly 74. At even par through seven holes, he bogeyed No. 8, double-bogeyed No. 11 and bogeyed 13 to hit 4-over through 13 holes. He fought back with back-to-back birdies on 15 and 16 before committing another bogey on 18.
