Emiliano Grillo’s hometown of Resistencia, Argentina, is about as far away from Ontario as you can go without crossing an ocean, but the 22-year-old made himself right at home in Canada Thursday, firing an 8-under 64 to take a one-stroke lead at the RBC Canadian Open.
Long-distance travel was something Grillo excelled at all day Thursday, birdying three of the four Par-5 holes at Glen Abbey.
Grillo was marvelously consistent, never going more than three holes without a birdie, to take a 1-stroke lead over Americans Vaughn Taylor and Brian Harman.
Bubba Watson, Jim Furyk, Hunter Mahan, and Jason Day are among a glut of 15 players tied for 17th at 4-under. Watson started off the day looking terrible, 3-over through six, then turned it around with seven birdies in his final 10 holes.
