Thomas, Thompson Lead John Deere

Justin Thomas and Nicholas Thompson each fired an 8-under 63 to share the lead at the John Deere Classic after one round Thursday as a whopping 20 players shot at least 5 strokes under par.

Thomas went on two incredible birdie runs, five in six holes between No. 3 and No. 8, and another 5 out of 6 between 13 and 18. The 22-year-old has five Top 10 finishes to his credit in 23 events this year.

Thompson was 4-under through 10 holes before slipping up with a bogey on No. 11. He bounced back with birdies on 13, 16, and 18, and an eagle 2 on the par-4, No. 14.

Three-time tournament champion Steve Stricker is two strokes back after a 6-under 65 on Thursday. Stricker was 8-under through 16 with eight birdies, only to bogey both 17 and 18 to fall off the pace.

The most watched player of the day had one of the least impressive rounds of his season to date. No. 2 Jordan Spieth is tied for 101st with an even-par 71. He was 1-under through 7, then struggled with three bogeys in four holes between 8 and 11. He bounced back with birdies on 13 and 14 to break even.
