Proving that you can wipe out an awful round with one great shot, Denmark’s Soren Kjeldsen won the Irish Open on Sunday in a playoff with a birdie on the first hole, defeating Bernd Wiesberger and Eddie Pepperell.
The recently turned 40 Kjeldsen had been in the lead since Friday, but stumbled his way to a 76 on Sunday to lose the lead entirely. Wiesberger, who was tied for the lead on Friday, also struggled with a chance to take the tournament by the horns, shooting a final-round 73.
That left Pepperell to charge up the lists with a bogey-free 69 to make it a three-man race at the end. Although he failed to secure the title Pepperell did lock up a spot in The Open Championship.
Kjeldsen’s final putt rattled around the cup before laying still, keeping him on edge for just a second longer than normal.
