Entering it as a 300-to-1 unknown long shot, he would shoot 6-under on the first 11 holes of the final day, but won by a single stroke when Thomas Bjorn melted down over the final four holes. Curtis was the first rookie to win his first Major since Tom Watson in 1975.
Steve Pate, a six-time PGA winner and current member of the Champions Tour, turns 54. Pate finished in the top 7 of all four Majors at one point in his career, including tying for third at the 1988 US Open and 1991 Masters. He won PGA Tour Comeback Player of the year in 1999, returning from a near-fatal car accident in 1999.
