Six times during his PGA career, Jeff Maggert came up just short of his first Major – finishing third four times and fifth twice.
On Sunday, he didn’t waste the opportunity on the Champions Tour, defeating Kevin Sutherland in a playoff to take the first Major of the year, the Regions Tradition played in Alabama.
Both men finished 14-under par in regulation, but Sutherland missed his par putt on the first playoff hole, allowing Maggert to hit a 4-foot par putt for the victory.
Overall it was Maggert’s worst round of the tournament – a 72 following two 67s and a 68, but the groundwork he laid paid off with the final putt.
He also climbs 26 spots in the Schwab Cup standings to No. 1, with Sutherland moving up 17 spots to No. 2.
Jeff Hart and Gene Sauers each shot a 69 on Sunday to finish 11-under, tied for third.
Maggert collected a check for $345,00 for his victory. The tour moves on to the Senior PGA Championship beginning May 21 in French Lick, Indiana. Colin Montgomerie is the defending champion.
