Webb Simpson, a Charlotte native who has played Quail Hollow more times than he can count, fired a 5-under 67 to tie Robert Streb for the lead at the Wells Fargo Championship on Friday, both men 10-under par.
It’s hard for either player to feel comfortable considering who is lurking in the rearview mirror at the halfway point of the tournament.
While Martin Flores and Patrick Rodgers are tied for third at 8-under, both world No. 1 Rory McIlroy and five-time Major winner Phil Mickelson are in the next group tied for fifth at 7-under.
McIlroy shot a 67 and Mickleson a 66 on Friday, but will not be grouped together Thursday due to the glut of players at 6-under and 7-under.
The cut came at even par, leaving the likes of Adam Scott (+3) on the wrong side of the line.
