The Players Championship is arguably the 5th major in golf, and this week plays host to the PGA TOUR. With one of the strongest non major field of the year, the beautiful TPC Sawgrass is all set for the PGA Tour’s marquee event of the year. Last year saw Martin Kaymer win his 1st Players Championship, on the back of a last day Jordan Spieth collapse.
Of the 144 players total, 100 have won a PGA TOUR event, 27 have won a Major, and combined they have 525 Tour wins.
Rickie Fowler is started to show signs of last year’s form, having finished last week’s WGC Cadillac Match Play event in tie for 9th, just his 2nd top-10 finish of the year. This week Rickie Fowler, along with Ian Poulter were voted the most overrated players on the PGA TOUR by fellow pros, and this could be in the inspiration he needs. Currently ranked No.13 in the world, Fowler is great value at 50/1 to capture only his 2nd PGA TOUR title.
Rory Mcilroy recorded his 10th PGA TOUR victory last week at the WGC Cadillac Match Play, and again proved why he is the world’s best. Although Mcilroy had struggled in the past at TPC Sawgrass, over the last couple of years he has showed signs of improvement, including a T-6thfinish last year. Mcilroy current leads the tour of total driving, and this will be a key for his success this week. The World No.1 is currently paying relatively short odds of 7/1 for victory.
Justin Rose struggled during the early PGA TOUR season, but has found his grove as of late. Following a T-2nd finish at Augusta, Rose then went onto win the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in his next start. At last year’s Players Championship, Rose finished T-4th, his best finish at TPC Sawgrass. Rose enters this week with decent odds of 20/1 for victory.
Jim Furyk’s long-time winless drought came to an end a few weeks ago, when he won the RBC Heritage. He continued that good form into last weeks WGC Cadillac Match Play, where he finished in 4th place. Fuyrk had his best finish at The Players Championship last year, finished solo 2nd behind Martin Kaymer. Despite his stellar form and good track record around TPC Sawgrass, Fuyrk is paying a very generous 25/1 for victory this week.
