If you’re going to tie a course record, it’s hard to top doing it in your home country on perhaps the finest course on the continent.
That’s exactly what 45-year-old Nic Henning did Thursday at the Royal Johannesburg & Kensington West Course. His 9-under 62 gave him a 1-stroke lead over fellow South Africans Tjaart Van Der Walt and Titch Moore.
Henning was dazzling on the front nine, reaching the turn at 8-under thanks to five birdies and an eagle 2 on the par-4 No. 3. Thoughts of a 59 might have been on his brain from there, but he cooled off, with just two birdies down the stretch.
Van Der Walt actually stroked more birdies on the round than Henning (9), but two bogeys, includng a sour one on 18, kept him from the lead.
