Wasting little time in uniting the front for the 2016 Ryder Cup, new US captain Davis Love III announced Tuesday that he will employ Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson as advisers for putting together a roster.
“I’m here with the same goals, but as a different captain,” Love said at a press conference on Tuesday. “2016 will be a collaborative effort of many individuals to create the best environment for our team to be totally prepared.”
Love laments not employing more of a brain trust for his term as captain in 2012, when the US lost a seemingly insurmountable lead and lost 14-1/2 to 13-1/2. That drama was not repeated in 2014 – the US simply got its butts kicked by the Europeans.
Mickelson was a vocal critic of decisions made by Tom Watson last fall during the loss.
“We really haven’t had the opportunity to voice our opinion to be heard,” Mickelson said, joining Love for the press conference on Tuesday. “To get everyone together to have a voice and to make an impact is really a positive step.”
Woods, who is taking a break from the PGA Tour to regain his form, released a written statement supporting Love.
“It’s an honor to be on the PGA of America Ryder Cup Committee, helping select future Captains, Vice Captains & other duties,” Woods wrote. “We are fully committed to winning back the Cup in 2016 and beyond.”
