What does being No. 1 in the world mean? You have a lot of influence.
Rory McIlroy showcased some of said influence on Monday when he announced via Twitter that Sergio Garcia and Ernie Els have joined the ranks of players who have committed to the Irish Open, which McIlroy’s charitable foundation is the title sponsor and host of.
Scheduled for May 28-31 at Royal County Down, the field will also contain McIlroy, Lee Westwood, Graeme McDowell, and Darren Clarke, who is assumed to be the next European Ryder Cup coach.
American Rickie Fowler will also be on hand.
For Garcia, it’s a homecoming of sorts. He won the event in 1999 as a rookie.
“I was just 19 when I won in Druids Glen in 1999, only two months after I turned professional,” Garcia said. “Not only am I returning to a very special event, but to a venue of which I have heard some incredible things. Royal County Down is a world-famous links and going by what Rory has been telling me, it could possibly be the best course I play this year.”
