Lucky 13s Tied Atop Qatar Masters

Who said 13 was an unlucky number?

It proved golden for a quartet of pros tied atop the Qatar Masters leaderboard Friday with matching 13-unders. Marc Warren, Branden Grace, Emiliano Grillo and Bernd Wiesberger are all locked together in a first-place tie.

Warren and Grillo fought their way into the tie by each shooting a 67, while Grace and Wiesberger fired 68s.

All four players are keeping a close eye on the rear-view mirror, where England’s Eddie Pepperell rose 27 spots Friday to 11-under with a scintillating 65.

Pepperell overcame two bogeys thanks to six birdies on the back nine. He’s tied for fifth with Alejandro Canizares and George Coetzee, who fell back two strokes from the lead with a 70 on Friday.

Defending champion Sergio Garcia fell out of contention with an ugly 77, dropping into a tied for 62nd. Garcia as 2-under through 10 before doubling 11 and tripling No. 15.
