Golf Birthdays: January 1

Here’s a list of golfers lighting the candles on January 1.

Paul Lawrie turns 46. The Scot is most well known for taking the Open Championship in 1999.  Down by 10 strokes to begin the final round, he competed the biggest comeback in PGA Tour history and Major history by firing a final-round 67 as leader Jean van de Velde melted down with a 77 that included a final-hole triple bogey. In the four-hole playoff, Lawrie’s drive to within four feet on the pin earned him a clinching birdie on the fourth hole.

Mike Sullivan  turns 60. The three-time PGA winner took the 1980 Southern Open by five strokes and bookended it with the 1994 BC Open shooting 18-under. His best Major finish was tied for 12th at the PGA Championship in 1989.
