Sweden’s Rikard Karlberg Makes History at CIMB Classic

Sweden’s Rikard Karlberg became the first Asian Tour player to lead the CIMB Classic at the completion of any round, firing a 7-under 65 Thursday in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The first round was interrupted by a two-hour thunderstorm, but that didn’t slow down Karlberg, who did not hit a single bogey, and knocked in five birdies on the front nine, along with two more on 17 and 18.

Karlberg is one of the top 10 Asian Tour players to qualify for the PGA event. He’s trailed immediately by a pair of Americans – Billy Hurley III and Brian Stuard, who each shot a 5-under 67, as did The Philippines’ Angelo Que.

Defending champion Ryan Moore is three strokes off the lead at 4-under, tied with seven other competitors, including Davis Love III.

The No. 2 player in the world, Sergio Garcia, a surprise entry here given it coincides with the start of the Final Series in China, shot a 3-under 69 and is tied for 13th.
