While the European Tour’s bigwigs are hitting the links for mad money in Shanghai this week, the PGA Tour starts the third week of the 2014-2015 season with a visit to Kuala Lumpur for the CIMB Classic.
Perhaps the most unlikely name on the entry list is Spain’s Sergio Garcia, who could be participating in Shanghai, in pursuit of the Race to Dubai title, but instead has opted for more of a “rest” week.
Garcia is paired with fellow Ryder Cup standout Lee Westwood and American Patrick Reed, who was on the losing side in Scotland earlier this fall, teeing off at 8:05 a.m. local.
Speaking of post-season winners, Thursday will mark the return of FedExCup winner Billy Horschel to the links. Horschel has not been out for a round since his daughter was born the day after he won the TOUR Championships in Atlanta in September.
He’ll tee off at 9:15 a.m. along with Charl Schwartzel and China’s Guan Tianlang, who finished fifth at last week’s Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship.
Jason Dufner, the 2013 PGA Championship winner, returns to the tour for the first time since the 2014 PGA Championship. He played in last week’s Perth International and finished 6-under, tied for 23rd.
Dufner will be paired with Hideki Matsuyama, who won last year’s Memorial, and Anirban Lahiri, who is ranked No. 2 on the Asian Tour, and is 69th in the world.
Defending champion Ryan Moore tees off at 7:55 a.m. on the back nine along with Gary Woodland and David Lipsky.
