Finland’s Miko Ilonen not only made himself a whole lot of money by winning last week’s Volvo Match Play Championship, he also propelled himself into the Race to Dubai’s Top 10.
Ilonen became the 19th European Tour player to crack €1 million this year with his big win, propelling him to 10th in the standings for the post-season tournament with €1.483 million in winnings.
The top 60 players on the money list at year’s end qualify for the post-season stretch run. South Africa’s Darren Fichardt is currently No. 60, holding a slim lead of just under €9,000 on No. 61 David Lipsky of the US.
Henrik Stenson, who won the Race to Dubai last year, moved up from fifth to third on the leaderboard by finishing second to Ilonen. Stenson has racked up €1.941 million this season.
Veteran Ernie Els of South Africa also improved his standing this weekend, thanks to his fifth place finish at the Hong Kong Open. Els is now 24th on the money list at €847,663.
Just one tournament remains until the start of the Final Series – the ISPS HANDA Perth International in Australia Oct. 23-26.
