Hunter Mahan Takes Barclays Title, FedExCup Lead

Hunter Mahan won a golf tournament for the first time in more than two years, allowing him to vault from 62nd to first in the FedExCup standings.
Mahan fired a final-round 65 to defeat Stuart Appleby, Cameron Tringale and 54-hole co-leader Jason Day by two strokes apiece.
The win earns Mahan $1.44 million and 2,500 FedEx points.
The tournament marked more futility for Day 3 co-leader Jim Furyk, who shot a final round 70 and finished four strokes off the pace, tied for eighth. Furyk has failed to win in each of his last eight times when he has had at least a share of the lead entering the final round.
Mahan played nearly flawless, bogeying No. 18 to make things a bit closer, but only after he had knocked in three straight birdies on 15-17.
Appleby also shot a 65, making five birdies in a six-hole string to start the back nine.
Ernie Els, William McGirt and Matt Kuchar tied for fifth at 11-under.
World No. 1 Rory McIlroy ended up nine strokes off the pace, tied for 22nd at 5-under with a final round 70.
