If Jim Furyk is ever going to break his 0-for-7 swoon when leading a tournament after 54 holes, this would be the time to do it.
Furyk is tied with Australia’s Jason Day at 9-under through three days of the Barclays, the opening leg of the 2014 FedExCup playoffs.
A win here would have Furyk as a major contender for the overall title and the money that goes with it. He’s led seven previous tournaments after 54 holes since winning the 2010 PGA Championship, and lost that lead in every one of them.
While Furyk was steady, Day was all over the place; losing a ball on No. 13 resulting in a double bogey, and needing four shots to get out of a bunker when he bogeyed No. 17.
Day kept on hitting clutch birdies in spurts, however, to keep himself in the mix.
It’s really anyone’s tournament at this point, with 15 players within three strokes of the lead. That bunch does not include the two highest-ranked players in the world, however.
World No. 1 Rory McIlroy and No. 2 Adam Scott are both five strokes back.
