A lucky golfer recorded his first hole-in-one then followed it up with a second ace a week later.
Paul Crooks, 48, a new member at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire, registered his first ace with his first swing of the day – after not hitting a ball for two weeks.
Due to a strong headwind, the 16-handicapper selected a driver for his golden moment on the 173-yard, par-three fifth. And, when he was next due to play – in a monthly medal – Crooks used a three-wood on the 169-yard, par-three fifth, and to his astonishment, hit it straight and sweet towards the pin.
Crooks, who has only been playing golf for four years, explained: “I bought a new box of Titleist balls the other day – before my first ace – and put my two daughter’s initials on them, as I always do, and headed off to the club.
“I still can’t believe my first hit of a golf ball in two weeks cleared the bunkers and found the hole. Needless to say, that is the first and only time that ball will ever be hit – it now has pride of place in my cabinet.
“Both my aces were obscured by grass mounds so I couldn’t see the ball go in the hole either time, but the surprise of my second ace was even greater. I couldn’t believe it when I saw my ball sat in the hole.”
Crooks’ aces entitled him to win two limited-edition BOSS Watches because they were scored in official club competitions.
The luxury German brand has once again pledged to reward club golfers with an exclusive watch for every hole-in-one recorded during a qualifying club competition in 2014 after giving away £600,000-worth of limited-edition mementos in 2013.
Crooks added: “I never thought this could happen to me once, but twice in two consecutive rounds is unbelievable.”
The scheme is open to any golfer whose club uses HowDidiDo – a free-to-use, web-based social network for golfers – and anybody playing in official club competitions is eligible. Currently, more than 1,800 clubs use the website.
Stephen Brydon, commercial director for MGS Distribution, the official licenced UK distributor for BOSS Watches, said: “Congratulations to Paul on achieving golf’s Holy Grail of a hole-in-one – particularly in the circumstances in which it was achieved.
“To the majority of amateur golfers, recording a hole-in-one will be the most memorable thing they achieve in golf – a once-in-a-lifetime experience probably – and we want to ensure they have much better memories than merely a dent in their bank balance after buying drinks in the clubhouse.
“The exclusive BOSS watch is available only to golfers who record a hole-in-one. It will provide a constant reminder of the achievement and also help to ensure they’re never late for a tee-time again.
