Nothing like a fat paycheck to jump to the top of the standings in your tour’s most prestigious field.
Rory McIlroy did just that on Sunday, winning the Open Championship to overtake Thomas Bjorn as the new money leader for the European Tour’s Race to Dubai.
In his 10 European Tour events this year (the four Majors count no matter where they are played) – McIlroy has racked up €2,634,933, or more than € 1 million more than Bjorn, who fell to second in the the standings.
Sergio Garcia, who finished tied for second at The Open, vaulted up to third in the rankings with €1,571,776. He is a little less than €50,000 behind Bjorn.
US Open champion Martin Kaymer is fourth, followed by Jamie Donaldson, Stephen Gallacher, Justin Rose, Victor Dubuisson, 2013 winner Henrik Stenson and Louis Oosthuizen.
In all, 13 players have won more than €1 million so far in the 2014 season, with McIlroy the only one to date to top €2 million.
