It didn’t take the European Tour long to administer its first monitoring penalty for slow play, and it couldn’t have happened to a bigger name.
At the ninth tee box of the first round of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, Spieth was warned by tour officials that he was being monitored based on slow play.
The warning meant that Spieth would be monitored to ensure that he teed off within 40 seconds to play each shot once they are informed of the monitoring. Failing to play within 40 seconds will result in a fine of $2,800.
Considering Spieth made $52 million last year in prize money and advertising dollars, this fine is a bit like a person who makes $50,000 a year being fined $2.50.
