Rickie Fowler took advantage of Henrik Stenson’s double bogey on No. 16 to rally to the Deutsche Bank Championship title on Monday, jumping to No. 3 in the FedEx Cup standings in the process.
Fowler’s finish was as scintillating as his tangerine outfit as he rolled in a 40-foot putt on the 1th hole and finished with a 68, his third win of the season following victories at The Players Championship and the Scottish Open.
Stenson went short into the water on No. 16, then was wide right on a bogey putt to settle for the double. He went down swinging, just missing an eagle wide left on No. 18, but the aggressive play made his ensuing birdie putt a longshot, and he pushed it a bit right.
Stenson started the day with a 1-stroke lead, and had pushed it to three strokes when he birdied three of his first five holes while Fowler hit back-to-back bogeys on 3 and 4.
Fowler pulled within one when he birdied 11 while Stenson bogeyed it, and was still down one when Stenson gave away the double-bogey 5 on No. 16.
Charley Hoffman, the Day 2 leader, finished third at 11-under with a closing day 67.
With the win, Fowler moved up to third in the FedEx Cup standings with 3,498 points, putting him 1,182 behind current leader Jason Day, and 511 behind Jordan Spieth, who has missed the cuts of the first two post-season tournaments.
Stenson, who finished second for a second straight week, is fourth at 3,352 points in just 12 events. The Swede is in the running for a second FedEx Cup title in three seasons. Only Tiger Woods (2007, 2009) has won the title more than once.
Day wound up tying for 12th at 6-under to add 221 points to his total. Entering the BMW Championship this week in Chicago, only Spieth, Fowler, Stenson, or No. 5 Bubba Watson (3,329 points) would take the lead from Day with a tournament win, assuming Day finished lower than third.
