Hale Irwin, three-time winner of the US Open, and its oldest-ever champion, turns 70. He won 87 titles overall, including 45 on the Champions Tour, the most in history. He had 20 PGA Tour titles including the three Majors, also finishing second at the 1983 The Open Championship and tied for fourth at the Masters twice. His first win at the US Open was called the “Massacre at Winged Foot,” as the course wrecked most players, with the cut set at 13-over and Irwin’s 7-over 287 good enough to win by two strokes. In 1979, he won a second US Open by two strokes over Jerry Pate and Gary Player. In 1990, he won a playoff in the 91st hole over Mike Donald, the first of sudden death after the two men tied in an 18-hole Monday playoff. At the time, it had been five years since Irwin’s last PGA title of any kind.
