Golf Birthdays: June 1-2

June 1

John Huston, a seven-time PGA Tour winner, turns 54. Huston had two Top 5 Major finishes: tied for third at the 1990 Masters and tied for fourth at the 2000 US Open. Often called the Tour’s “fastest player”, he left the PGA Tour with two records, a 28-under 260 at the 1998 United Airlines Hawaiian Open, which broke a 53-year-old record, and a course-record 61 at The Memorial in 1996.

Darron Stiles, a five-time Web.com winner, turns 42. He is the Web.com Tour’s all-time money leader with just more than $1.8 million.

June 2

Casey Martin, who famously sued the PGA and won the right to use a golf cart during competition, turns 43. Martin never had a top-10 finish in his 43 PGA events, but created quite the buzz with his 2001 case that reached the US Supreme Court, arguing that his circulatory condition, which impaired his ability to walk, fell under the Americans with Disabilities Act. The Supreme Court voted 7-2 in his favor. Martin is currently head golf coach at the University of Oregon.

Craig Stadler, who has one of golf’s meanest but probably most fitting nicknames (The Walrus), turns 62. Stadler won the 1982 Masters and was the PGA Tour’s money leader that year. He won 13 PGA titles overall, along with two on the European Tour and nine on the Champions Tour. In his Masters win, he had a six-shot lead with seven to play, then bogeyed four of the last six to fall into a playoff with Dan Pohl. He parred the first extra hole while Pohl bogeyed it.
