Giving no definitive time frame, Tiger Woods announced Wednesday he would not play again on the PGA Tour until he felt his game had improved to his professional standard.
His last two outings have been the worst of his career; a career-worst 82 to miss the cut at Phoenix, followed by his withdrawal from Torrey Pines after 11 holes due to back tightness.
“Right now, I need a lot of work on my game, and to still spend time with the people that are important to me,” he said. “My play, and scores, are not acceptable for tournament golf. Like I’ve said, I enter a tournament to compete at the highest level, and when I think I’m ready, I’ll be back.”
Woods hopes to play the Honda Classic on February 26. If he is not in the Top 50 golfers in the world rankigns, he won’t be able to play at the WGC-Cadillac Championship.
In the past 12 months, woods has finished all 72 holes in just four of 11 tournaments. In 2014, he missed the Masters and the US Open due to injury, and finished 69th at the Open Championship and missed the cut at the PGA Championship.
He has not won a tournament since the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in August of 2013.
