Just as Wikipedia is the Internet’s knowledge base, Itunes its music store and Amazon the home for just about everything else,so too is Sporcle rapidly become our trivia night out at the bar.
With nearly eight years online, the trivia website is free to play but also offers free memberships, and not surprisingly is home to a number of golf quizzes ranging from the easy to the insane.
Here is a look at some of our favorite quizzes to date, along with your noble blogger’s scores on each one.
Name the Golf Scoring Terms: Score 8/8 – Yes, I started with an easy one,but hey, I need to boost my confidence, I’ve only been writing this golf blog for 20 months, things could get ugly in a hurry.
Players Who Have Won 2+ Masters:Score 9/17 – I’m embarrassed to not name Byron Nelson, Ben Hogan, or Ben Crenshaw, but pleased that I got Seve Ballesteros, who won his two titles when I was 6 and 9 years old. I never would have guessed Horton Smith.
Name the Top 10 golfers in the year end World Golf Rankings Since 1986: Score: 174/280: My goal was two-fold, get at least 50% – mission accomplished; and get all 10 for at least one year – which I managed to do for 2007 and 2013. Quite frankly I can’t imagine how anyone could get a perfect score on this; who’s going to remember Tsuneyuki Nakajima in 1986 or Mark McNulty in 1990?
Name the US states with the most golf courses: Score: 11/16. The time limit was a scant two minutes, but I managed six of the top eight in that time. Which stumped me worst? Shocking No. 3 selection Michigan, with 1,047.
Name the 3+ Major Golfers Minefield: Score:9/45.This one’s a bit different – the minute you answer wrong, you’re done. For me, that took all of 41 seconds before I guessed Ben Crenshaw and got shut down.
