The golf world found itself with a heavy heart this week before Christmas, when news emerged from Sydney that one of the two people killed in the hostage situation in Sydney was Katrina Dawson, daughter of former Royal & Ancient captain Sandy Dawson.
Katrina Dawson, 38, was a married mother of three and a well-known Sydney barrister. She was one of 17 customers and employees at the Lindt chocolate cafe taken hostage by self-described Muslim cleric Man Haron Monis. Monis held off police for 16 hours.
Both Dawson and cafe manager Tori Johnson were killed by Monis while trying to commit acts of valor. Dawson attempted to shield a pregnant friend from the gunman and was shot. Johnson went after Monis’ gun when it appeared the terrorist was beginning to fall asleep.
Other hostages were able to escape as Johnson wrestled with Monis, who was eventually killed by Sydney police.
