The problem with Henrik Stenson is that guys like Mikko Ilonen can’t even say they’re the best golfer in Scandinavia, let alone one of the best in the world.
That changed at least for one week on Sunday, as Ilonen bested Stenson to win the Volvo Match Play Championship in London by a 3 & 1 count.
Down a hole through four, Ilonen took command with back-to-back wins on 11 and 12 to go 3 up. A birdie on No. 17 sealed the victory.
Ilonen reached the afternoon session courtesy a thrilling 2 & 1 win over The Netherlands’ Joost Luiten.
Luiten’s birdie on the par-5 No. 13 put him up a stroke, but Ilonen finished with birdie wins at 14, 15 and 17 to take the win.
Stenson’s escape from the semifinals was even more dramatic. The 2013 Race to Dubai and FedExCup champion was down two holes by the time he got to No. 3, and never led until it mattered the most, birdying No. 18 to escape.
Ilonen hauls in €375,000 for his victory.
