France’s Alexander Levy Sets Record at Portugal Masters

Upstaged by Nicolas Colsaerts’ 60 on Thursday, France’s Alexander Levy set a record of his own on Friday.

Levy followed up his first-round 63 with a scintillating 61 on Saturday to hit the 36-hole mark at 18-under, a new tournament record.

He’s the leader, at least for now. Levy was one of only five players to finish his second round due to heavy rains in the area for a second straight day.

The second round will resume at 8 a.m. local time on Saturday, with the third round to commence sometime thereafter.

Levy has yet to hit a bogey so far in this tournament, and has racked up a staggering 18 birdies in 36 holes. He shot a 30 on the front nine for a second straight day, and also went 5-under on the back nine.

Colsaerts is 4-under through 16 to sit three strokes back at 15-under. He was 2-under at the turn before bogeying No. 1, but rallied with three birdies in four holes before the rains came.

Only two other players are even within shouting distance of Levy – England’s Richard Bland and Northern Ireland’s Michael Hoey are each at 10 under, although neither has completed his second round, with Bland done through 15 and Hoey through 12.

Two of the other four players to finish the round – Spain’s Rafa Cabrera-Bello and South Africa’s Thomas Aiken, are part of a five-way tied for fifth at 9-under.

A number of players never even got their second rounds started on Friday, which should make for a taxing weekend.
