European Team Takes Two-Point Lead on Day One

With a chance to win three straight Ryder Cups in sight, Europe started the 2014 edition with a 5-3 win over the US squad.

The Europeans won three points and halved the fourth in the Friday afternoon foursomes. The only Americans to stop the bleeding were Jimmie Walker and Rickie Fowler, who halved against Sergio Garcia and Rory McIlroy.

The Americans played better in morning, going 2-1-1 with wins from young guns Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed, and veterans Keegan Bradley and Phil Mickelson.
